Because of the use of DDT pesticides in natural habitats, wildlife birds such as the peregrine falcon and the bald eagle populations declined significantly. Researchers have found that the chemical DDT changes the physiological features of producing strong eggshells. When the female bird laid the eggs with the thin shell it would break on impact resulting in destruction of the young.

Because of the environmental movement in the late 1960’s, DDT was banned. Wisconsin was one of the firsts to ban it in 1971. DDT is still used in other countries to fight malaria.

The peregrine falcon and bald eagle plus other wildlife have suffered great losses and wildlife conservationist wanted to bring back the birds before they became extinct.

Peregrine falcons were place on the Wisconsin Endangered and Threatened Species List in 1975. The federal government drafted a national peregrine falcon recovery plan. Wisconsin also enacted Peregrine Falcon Recovery Plan for Wisconsin. It was also put on the Endangered Species Act in 1973. On August 25, 1999, the American peregrine falcon was delisted.

The bald eagle was removed from the Wisconsin Endangered Species List in 1997. The Bald eagle was first listed on March 11, 1967 on the Endangered Species Act listing. It is currently designated as Threatened in the U.S.A

Endangered Species Act

The endangered Species Act was created in 1973. According governmental officials it’s purpose was "Whenever any species is listed as a threatened species pursuant to subsection (c) of this section, the Secretary shall issue such regulations as he deems necessary and advisable to provide for the conservation of such species. The Secretary may by regulation prohibit with respect to any threatened species any act prohibited under section 9(a)(1), in the case of fish or wildlife, or section 9(a)(2), in the case of plants, with respect to endangered species; except that with respect to the taking of resident species of fish or wildlife, such regulations shall apply in any State which has entered into a cooperative agreement pursuant to section 6(c) of this Act only to the extent that such regulations have also been adopted by such State"
